Try Sudoku For A Memorable Bite

You've probably seen it on advertisements in newspapers and on newspaper dispensers, and even at magazine stands. Or maybe your friends are playing it. It's the game that is sweeping America and the rest of the world, not unlike the type of hold that crossword puzzles had thirty years ago, only faster. The game being spoken of, of course, is Sudoku.

Sudoku. You know what's meant by this name, even if you don't really understand the name itself in relation to anything else in the concrete world. Yet when you see the 'playing board,' understanding comes pummeling in.

With Sudoku, understanding is not so much the matter at hand, as is deciphering and determining answers. The game is played on a nine by nine square grid, somewhat like chess, Go, or a vastly more complex version of tic-tac-toe. Within the large nine by nine square, smaller three by three squares have also been cordoned off (and every other smaller, three by three square, in turn, has been darkened to differentiate it from other similar squares).

Thus there is a playing area consisting of nine three by three squares contingent to one another, and every other mini-square darkened to heighten differentiation, the reasons for doing so which will be soon apparent.

The idea behind Sudoku is to fill in a number in each of the squares. However, there are specifications as to what numbers can go where, and how often. Each of the nine rows, according to the rules, must have one -and only one of each of the numbers ranging from one to nine. That is to say that each row must have one through nine in each of the nine squares with no repeat numbers and no omissions.

To make things seemingly more difficult -but truly easier, each of the three by three squares must also reflect the same rule as the rows. Thus, not only must each line but also each square must have one through nine in it.

To succeed at this would be seemingly impossible, save for the stoutest of mathematicians, yet all is not lost. The kind sadists that make these games tend to supply a certain percentage of numbers within the game ahead of time. This number tends to decrease with increasingly more difficult levels, but most people find this much to their satisfaction. The truth is, the game is positively addictive!
