Sudoku. You've heard of it, and maybe even seen it, but you're still not quite sure what the hell it's all about. Well, let's first start with some basics. Sudoku is a Japanese word, as may be obvious, but it was actually invented in the United States, in 1979. It was originally meant as a brain tickler/stimulator, and that is exactly what it is to this day. While the game didn't take off in America, it became extremely popular in Japan and the rest of the world fell under its sway soon after, ergo the Japanese name.

Sudoku directions are simple, to say the least. First, there is a 9 by 9 grid which is in turn broken up by 3 by 3 grids. Every other smaller grid is darker colored than the plain white grids, thus facilitating a bit of ease on the eyes when trying to differentiate one sub-grid from another.

According to basic Sudoku directions, a number has to be filled in within each space. This sounds simple, but Sudoku directions dictate that each 3 by 3 square have every number between 1 and 9 represented within the spaces. As there are only 9 spaces, that means there can be no repetition of numbers.

It gets even more tricky from here. Sudoku directions also say that each row -as a part of the grid, also maintain the same number of 1 through 9 digits, and again, with no repeats of any numbers. This is the extent to the directions, but not the fun, nor the strategy.

With regards to strategy, this too is simple by explanation, but much more involved in application. Basically, the idea is to utilize process of elimination by determining which lines have a given number. Then, by doing this same process with the rows running the other direction, often enough a single square will be applicable to a specific number. This can be difficult and strenuous at times, but it is worth it.

The sheer satisfaction at playing and completing a Sudoku board is the essence of exhilaration itself. Of course, reading about it is only the beginning. The proof of the taste, as they say, is in the pudding. Or in this case, in the playing.
